Baghdad, Iraq, The secretariat of the Federation of Arab Journalists has decided to assign a team of lawyers to start a lawsuit in international courts against the Israeli occupation, asking the United Nations to investigate Israeli crimes against Palestinian journalists and send an urgent message to the upcoming Arab summit to urge Arab leaders to shoulder their responsibilities by taking bold decisions against the Zionist enemy to put an end to the targeting of the Palestinian people, especially journalists.
A statement by the General Secretariat of the Federation of Arab Journalists said that the FAJ held an emergency meeting at its headquarters in Cairo, responding to the call of the FAJ's Union President Muayyad al-Lami to discuss the serious developments in Palestine and crimes committed by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian people and journalists in particular.
The Secretariat reiterated its support to the Palestinian journalists and their solidarity and the right of the Palestinian people to freedom and independence, especially the right to return to their land and homeland, praising the courage of the Palestinian people in the face of the destructive war machine of the Israeli fascist.
The Federation of Arab Journalists decided, in its emergency meeting, headed by Muayyad al-Lami "to form a crisis cell to follow up developments and activate the decisions of the Secretariat and follow-up implementation of the meeting's decisions."
The meeting also decided to "go to the international courts, including the International Criminal Court to prosecute the leaders of the Zionist occupation state and its political and military officials responsible for crimes against journalists. The FAJ decided to assign a defense team of lawyers to coordinate and consult with the Union of Arab Lawyers to follow up these files in the international judiciary."
The General Secretariat of the Federation of Arab Journalists also decided to "go to the Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression at the United Nations to set up an urgent commission of inquiry and go to Palestine to investigate Israeli crimes against Palestinian journalists immediately."
The FAJ's decisions included continuing consultations with the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on Palestine to urge him to expedite the publication of his report on the dangerous situation of Palestinian journalists and to send a letter to the EU Commission to call on all European countries to shoulder their responsibilities to protect Palestinian journalists.
The decisions of the emergency meeting of the Federation of Arab Journalists also included "calling on all Arab and regional organizations and trade unions and organizations and all conscience and the international community to condemn these crimes and intensify coordination in order to follow the Zionist criminals and their impunity."
The Federation also decided, in its extraordinary meeting, to organize protest activities by all the Arab press organizations and urged the Arab media to allocate wider media space to define the nobility of the Palestinian cause and expose the crimes of the occupation and to demand all the Arab parliamentary councils to enact legislation to criminalize normalization, especially media normalization with the Zionist entity "
The emergency meeting of the Federation of Arab Journalists also resulted in "sending an urgent message to the summit of the Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia and their political and hold them moral responsibilities by taking bold historic decisions against the Zionist enemy and putting an end to the targeting of the Palestinian people.
The Secretariat also decided at its extraordinary meeting to launch the annual report of the Standing Committee for Freedoms in 2017 in Palestine in support of the role and sacrifices of Palestinian journalists.
