Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil on Monday said that the rabid campaigns spearheaded freshly over the naturalization decree take aim at the President of the republic and the tenure.
"The recent campaign clearly aims to attack the tenure and its president," Bassil said.
"[The President] will not cover the crime of some sides and their silence over the attempt to settle 1.5 million Syrians," he added.
"The current talk about naturalization tampers with the national identity and nationality," he stressed.
"Collective settlement is rejected; but the individual naturalization of those deserving it and fighting settlement is appropriate," he continued.
Bassil explained that individual naturalization cases include those born of a Lebanese mother, stateless people, and major humanitarian situations.
"The naturalization decree does not bear the signature of the foreign minister but we are concerned with granting citizenship to those deserving it," he underlined.
