Syrian Ambassador hands Bassil response letter from Moallem on Syria’s law 10

Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Abdul Karim Ali, on Monday visited Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, and handed him a response letter from his Syrian counterpart Walid Moallem, over the fresh property law, known as law 10, issued by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Ali explained that the law came to rectify and guarantee the rights of Syrians, and that Minister Bassil was reassured by the letter's content.

"The letter confirms Syria's need and keenness on the return of all its sons," he said.

"The letter reassured Bassil and answered his questions. As to the mechanism, it requires coordination between the Lebanese and Syrian governments, and the concerned sides," he added.

"I believe that it is in the interest of the officials in Lebanon, on top of whom President Michel Aoun and Minister Bassil, to tell the United Nations that coordination between the two states is the guarantee for the Syrians' return and for the security of Syrian and Lebanon," the Ambassador said.

On the naturalization of Syrian businessmen, Ali said "this is a Lebanese affair in which we do not interfere."

Bassil has also met today with Human Rights Watch's Beirut office director Lama Fakih.
