The return of the Syrian refugees to their country cannot await the political solution to the Syrian crisis, President Michel Aoun told the representatives of the International Support Group for Lebanon, at Baabda palace on Thursday.
"Lebanon's capacities can no more allow their stay on its soil to an undetermined period of time, considering the negative reverberations on different scales, especially the economic level, as losses have exceeded USD 10 billion," Aoun said.
"Lebanon is faithful to its commitments to the United Nations and the friendly states; it is also keen on preserving this strong relation," he added.
"There is a difference between the return and the political solution; Lebanon believes that this return is possible now that there are safe and stable areas," he stressed.
At the beginning of the meeting, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Pernille Dahler Kardel, conveyed to Aoun the ISG congratulations on the legislative elections and support for the efforts exerted to form the new government.
"The ISG will carry on supporting Lebanon," Kardel said, highlighting the necessity of partnership for the sake of the country's stability, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
She later handed to the President a memorandum on the ISG vision on the future of cooperation with Lebanon.
