BAGHDAD, US President Donald Trump said his country would pay nothing to Turkey for the release of US priest Andrew Branson, whom he described as a "great national hostage."
"We will not pay anything for the release of an innocent man, but we will suffocate Turkey," Trump said on his Twitter account.
A Turkish court on Wednesday rejected the release of the US priest.
The Izmir court decided to reject the request, asserting that Brunson would remain under house arrest.
Trump doubled tariffs on imports of Turkish aluminum and steel last week, contributing to a sharp drop in the Turkish currency.
Branson is accused of supporting an attempted coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan two years ago. The US pastor, who is tried on charges of terrorism, denies the charges.
His lawyer previously said that his client had filed a petition with a Turkish court for his release after being placed under house arrest and demanded that the travel ban imposed on him be lifted.
