BAGHDAD, Portugal has confirmed its support for the Iraqi armed forces, praising the capabilities of the Iraqi army and its heroism in liberating the territory that was under the control of Daesh.
"The Iraqi charge d'affaires in Portugal, Ali Hadi al-Bayati, met Portuguese Defense Minister Jose Azerido Lopez at the ministry's headquarters in Lisbon," a foreign ministry statement said.
The charge d'affaires expressed the gratitude of the Iraqi government and people for Portugal's position and support for Iraq in its fight against terrorism through its participation in the US-led international coalition and sending it military trainers to train Iraqi forces and provide military advice.
Al-Bayati stressed during the meeting "the need to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense and security and to benefit from the Portuguese military experience through the exchange of experiences between the two sides in the security field."
For his part, the Portuguese Defense Minister praised the capabilities of the Iraqi army and its heroism in the liberation of the territory that was under the control of Daesh, stressing the continued support of his country to the Iraqi armed forces.
