BAGHDAD, The 139th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) opened in Geneva on Monday morning with the participation of the delegation of the Iraqi Council of Representatives headed by Deputy Speaker, Hassan Karim Al-Kaabi.
"The election of the President of the 139th General Assembly is scheduled to take place at the beginning of the meeting, as well as the topics on the agenda of the International Federation," a statement from the House of Representatives said.
The statement added, "The Iraqi delegation will attend today the meetings of the standing committees, international peace and security, sustainable development, trade, democracy and human rights, United Nations affairs, women and youth and specialized committees.
"The emergency item will be discussed during the meeting to address the problem of UNRWA's budget deficit and to ensure the continued provision of humanitarian services to Palestinian refugees, as well as their participation in the work of the 139th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union," it added.
During the past two days, the Iraqi parliamentary delegation held a series of meetings with its counterparts to discuss joint relations and ways to develop them in addition to its active participation in a number of coordination meetings, including the Women Parliamentarians Forum with Islamic, Arab and Asian countries.
