Mexico City, Hurricane Willa on Monday intensified into a Category 5 storm which could be "potentially catastrophic" for parts of Mexico's Pacific coast, the US National Hurricane Center said.

The hurricane could produce "life-threatening" storm surge, wind and rainfall over the western-central and south-western regions of the country, dpa reported.

The hurricane was located at 215 kilometers south-west of Cabo Corrientes with winds blowing at up to 315 kilometers per hour at 1500 GMT, according to Mexico's National Meteorological Service.

It was making its way northwards and was expected to make a landfall on Tuesday, affecting the states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.
