Canada imposes sanctions on 17 Saudis on Khashoggi case

BAGHDAD, The Canadian Foreign Ministry has announced the imposition of sanctions on 17 Saudi nationals suspected of involvement in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Foreign Minister Christia Freeland has announced the imposition of sanctions on 17 Saudi nationals, whom the Canadian government considers responsible for the "killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi outside the court" or involved in it.

The sanctions freeze the assets of those listed in Canada and prevent them from entering the country.

Canada renewed its call for a transparent investigation into the circumstances of Khashoggi's death, adding that Saudi Arabia's explanations so far on the issue "lacked logic and credibility."

It affirmed its "commitment to support and continue to defend human rights defenders around the world.
