Visiting U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Satterfield confirmed on Tuesday that the United States would do its utmost to support Lebanon's national options, touting "options that will salvage the country out of conflict and foreign ideologies."
In the wake of a meeting with Kataeb Party leader, MP Sami Gemayel, in the presence of US Ambassador to Lebanon, Elizabeth Richard, the top U.S. official explained that his Lebanon tour came following the formation of a government and in light of changes in the region.
"There is a desire on the part of the United States to see real stability and security prevail in Lebanon; however, this depends on the country's national options -- which are not dictated by others," Satterfield maintained.
"Lebanon has long suffered from conflicts and foreign ideologies promoted on its territory. This situation must change, and there must be serious decisions taken in this context. Political parties in Lebanon are effective and there must be a national movement in this direction," he added, confirming that the United States will do all it can to support Lebanon's national options.
