Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Raya Al-Hassan, on Wednesday discussed with UN Secretary-General's Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Mami Mizutori, the United Nations projects in Lebanon to mitigate risks and disasters.
It was an important and productive meeting with Minister Al-Hassan, whom I briefed on the work of our specialized office in providing full support to reduce risks and disasters. Our efforts aim to spare countries any of these risks and disasters at all levels, Mizutori said in the wake of the meeting.
"We are in Lebanon because it is a very important country in the region, and a UN member. I would like to commend the Lebanese Government's policy in managing disaster reduction; we have been closely following up on this issue. The United Nations fully supports the efforts of the Lebanese government in this context, she added.
In addition, we have a daily cooperation between us and the National Council for Scientific Research to mitigate the damage of accidents and disasters in case they happen, the UN's DRR representative said.
Separately, Al-Hassan discussed with the regional representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for the Middle East and North Africa, Christina Albrton, the best means to coordinate and cooperate with the relevant departments of the Ministry of Interior in the fight against drugs.
