Copenhagen, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has handed in his resignation following elections that saw his governing
bloc lose to the opposition, dpa reported.
Rasmussen will stay on as head of a caretaker government.
After meeting with Queen Margrethe and Crown Prince Frederik to inform them of his decision, Rasmussen told reporters he had "no idea" how soon a new government could take office.
The queen will meet parties to sound out who should attempt to form a government.
