Former South Korean President sentenced to 25 years in prison

Baghdad, A South Korean appeals court sentenced former President Pak John Hye to 25 years in prison in a corruption scandal that ousted her from power in early 2017.

"The Supreme Court of Seoul found that Pak was guilty of charges, including bribery," Yonhap News Agency reported.

A court had sentenced Ms. Pak to 24 years in prison in April, saying she had colluded with her friend Choi Sun-sil to get tens of billions of Korean currency "won" from large groups such as Samsung and Lotte to support the Choi family and finance nonprofit institutions.

Prosecutors appealed the sentence and demanded that the sentence be commuted.
