“Let’s Talk” ..A UN- governmen dialogue that discusses ways to combat violence against women

Baghdad The United Nations Development Program in Iraq, in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Health, and the representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government, in the presence of representatives of women’s civil organizations, organized a conference (Let’s Talk) in the city of Erbil as part of the activities of the “16 days campaign to combat violence against women.”

The representative of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Marwa Moneim Majeed, spoke about the medical procedures taken by the Ministry of Health to care for survivors of violence, indicating that hospitals are the first party that receives survivors and the necessity of streamlining medical and legal procedures together.

He stressed the importance of having explicit legal legislation that guarantees the protection of medical staff, doctors, and women empowerment members working within health institutions, in the event that they are forced to report cases of violence regarding children under the age of 6 years or people with special needs and disabilities, since they cannot file a complaint on their behalf. He also called on the legislative authorities and civil organizations to submit their legal proposals to protect the segment of doctors from tribal accountability with the families of the victims in such cases because of reporting.

In turn, the US Ambassador to Iraq, Elena Romansky, affirmed her country’s support for all governmental, legislative and judicial efforts to reduce the phenomenon of violence against women.
