CGTN: China calls on world political parties to jointly address global challenges

BEIJING, July 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As wars and conflicts still persist in some parts of the world, hunger and disease are still prevalent, misunderstanding and opposition are deepening, China on Tuesday provided its answer to world political parties to address global challenges, which is cooperation.

“No country can stand aloof in the face of global challenges, and cooperation is the only choice,” said Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese president, in a keynote speech at the CPC and World Political Parties Summit via video link in Beijing.

In his speech, Xi called on political parties to embrace the idea of global community with a shared future.

All countries and nations are equally entitled to development opportunities and rights to development, Xi said, adding that development is the right of all countries, rather than an exclusive privilege of the few.

Xi called on world political parties to face up the problem of development gap, and pay more attention to the less developed countries and regions.

He also urged political parties worldwide to jointly oppose the practice of seeking technology blockade and divide as well as decoupling.

“We need to enable all countries to step up development cooperation, and see to it that the fruits of development are shared by all,” Xi said, stressing that any political manipulation for the purpose of sabotaging the development of other countries and undercutting the livelihood of other peoples will receive little support and prove to be futile.

Oppose unilateralism disguised as multilateralism

“We should stand opposed to the practice of unilateralism disguised as multilateralism and say no to hegemony and power politics,” Xi said.

“International rules should be agreed upon by all countries, not a few people. Cooperation among countries should aim to serve all mankind instead of seeking hegemony by way of group politics,” Xi reiterated.

China will never seek hegemony, expansion, or sphere of influence, he stressed, adding that China will always be a member of the developing world.

CPC willing to shoulder more responsibilities

The CPC is willing to make new contributions to improve human well-being, Xi noted.

China has helped 98.99 million rural people get out of poverty since 2012 and met the target of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule.

Speaking of China’s success in poverty alleviation, Xi said the CPC is willing to contribute more Chinese solutions and Chinese strength to the poverty reduction process worldwide.

40 Million People Relied on GFN Food Banks for Meals amid COVID-19 Crisis in 2020

Food banks increased their reach by 132 percent over the previous year due to increased demand for food caused by pandemic and faltering economic conditions

Chicago, IL, July 07, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) announced that food banks in 44 countries served 40 million people in 2020, a 132 percent increase over service in 2019. The data is part of GFN’s annual Network survey, which this year includes information about how GFN-supported food banks around the world responded to COVID-19.

The significant increase in people accessing food banks reflects the toll of the pandemic. As food requests rose from cut-off or quarantined communities, food banks rapidly deployed their transport, inventory, and logistics infrastructures to assist people who were isolated due to closed schools and public support agencies or overwhelmed health systems.

“Food banks have served as a lifeline for millions of people during the health crisis,” said Lisa Moon, president and CEO of The Global FoodBanking Network. “When the pandemic rattled economies and prevented access to food, food banks responded where existing infrastructure failed. They proved agile and resourceful, providing emergency relief and hope to their communities.”

African food banks, which served 169 percent more people than the year before, reported the highest increase in people served globally, followed by food banks in Latin America, which served 157 percent more people than in 2019.

Many food banks embraced mass distribution through congregate feeding sites and meal kit deliveries as they sought to reach the most people possible. More than half of the people served by GFN partner food banks in 2020 were women and girls.

Children were especially vulnerable during lockdowns and movement restrictions. In response to widespread school closures, the majority of GFN partner food banks that operated or supported feeding programs for school-age children (including school lunches, after-school snacks, and backpack programs) quickly pivoted to alternative models, such as providing food directly to families or organizing distribution events at schools and daycare centers.

As COVID-19 disrupted the global food supply chain, food banks saw a shift in the sources of donated products. According to the survey, food banks experienced a tremendous drop in donations from food services, restaurants, hotels, grocers, and markets. At the same time, food donations from the agricultural sector nearly doubled in 2020, partly because farms did not have the informal labor force needed for harvest.

This year promises to be another challenging year for food banks. In the GFN survey, food banks in many countries reported deep concern over slow vaccine rollouts, additional waves of infections, economic recovery and recession, and staff and volunteer burnout.

“COVID-19 has made the hunger crisis even more urgent,” said Moon. “Now more than ever, it is important that governments, businesses, and other community leaders partner with food banks, which are community assets that work to ensure all people have access to food.”

بكين، 7 يوليو 2021 — / PRNewswire / أطلقت شركة الصين للبتروكيماويات (في بورصة هونج كونج:  0386، “ Sinopec “) أول مشروع صيني لاحتجاز الكربون واستخدامه وتخزينه ( CCUS ) على نطاق المليون طن، حقل نفط سينوبك تشيلو-شنغلي CCUS (الـ “مشروع”).  ومن المقرر أن تصبح أكبر قاعدة CCUS تجريبية للسلسلة الصناعية الكاملة في الصين وحالة تطبيق لتعزيز التطوير واسع النطاق لـ CCUS في الصين.

 ويُمثِّل المشروع، الذي من المتوقع أن يدخل حيز الإنتاج بحلول نهاية عام 2021، علامة بارزة في تقدم البناء في مشاريع CCUS في الصين، وهو دليل هائل على تطور الصناعة.  كما أنه من الأهمية بمكان تعزيز قدرات خفض انبعاثات الكربون في الصين وبناء نموذج “دورة الكربون الاصطناعية” مع تقدم الدولة للوصول إلى ذروة انبعاثات الكربون بحلول عام 2030 وحيادية الكربون بحلول عام 2060.

CCUS هي وسيلة تقنية مهمة للتعامل مع تغير المناخ العالمي والتحكم في انبعاثات غازات الاحتباس الحراري، واحتجاز وتنقية ثاني أكسيد الكربون المنبعث أثناء الإنتاج واستخدامه في عملية إنتاج جديدة لإعادة التدوير والتخزين.

ويتألف المشروع ذو نطاق المليون طن والذي أطلقته سينوبك من جزأين – احتجاز ثاني أكسيد الكربون لشركة “سينوبك تشيلو” وإزاحة وتخزين ثاني أكسيد الكربون الناتج عن حقل نفط شنغلي.  وتقوم شركة سينوبك تشيلي باحتجاز ثاني أكسيد الكربون ونقله إلى حقل نفط سينوبك شنغلي لمزيد من الإزاحة والتخزين، مما يحقق تطبيقًا متكاملًا لاحتجاز الكربون وإزاحته وتخزينه من أجل عزل ثاني أكسيد الكربون تحت الأرض.

من المقدر أن يقلل المشروع من انبعاثات الكربون بمقدار 1 مليون طن سنويًا، أي ما يعادل زراعة ما يقرب من 9 ملايين شجرة وإيقاف تشغيل 600 ألف سيارة اقتصادية.  ويُعتبر النفط الصيني الكبير المستخدم في البداية ( OIIP ) مناسبًا لإزاحة ثاني أكسيد الكربون، وسيؤدي تطوير صناعة CCUS إلى إنشاء دعم سليم من أجل ضمان أمن الطاقة في الصين وتعزيز التحول منخفض الكربون في صناعة الطاقة الأحفورية.

Supreme Court Calls on Muslims to Sight Dhu Al-Hijjah on Friday Evening

Riyadh, The Supreme Court has called on all Muslims throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to sight the crescent of the month of Dhu Al-Hijjah on Friday Evening, Dhu-AlQa’dah 29, 1442 AH, corresponding to 9 July 2021.

In a statement issued today, the Supreme Court called on whoever sights the crescent by naked eyes or by using telescopes to report to the nearest court and register the testimony, or report to the nearest center to help reach the nearest court.

The court hopes that whoever has the sighting ability will join committees formed for this purpose in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s regions.

Ultra-competitive Saudi Fashion Program Unveils Finalists for Year-long Mentorship Program with Industry Legends

Riyadh, Saudi fashion designers and brands are set to commence a year-long mentorship program with support from some of the world’s leading fashion experts after the Fashion Commission announced the finalists of its inaugural Saudi 100 Brands program.

With more than 1,300 brands and designers competing for a coveted place on the scheme, applications were condensed to a shortlist of some 400 candidates. Those living in the Kingdom were invited over a period of 2 weeks to attend in-person interviews at hubs located in Riyadh and Jeddah, with virtual interviews conducted for those living abroad.

The application process revealed an astonishingly diverse range of creative fashion design talent as well as the increasingly large number of established Saudi fashion designers already running successful businesses in both the Kingdom and in international fashion hubs around the world.

Alongside a plethora of younger start-up brands, shortlisted candidates include a bridalwear designer from Khobar whose fashion career spans four decades, and a third-generation family jewelry business based in Riyadh, as well as Saudis operating out of London and Dubai. More established Saudi fashion brands also made the cut, reflecting a positive response to this opportunity for ongoing, tailor-made, international-subject-matter-expert advice.

Intensive sessions with the Saudi 100 Brands Curation Committee saw shortlisted candidates interviewed about their approach to business and design and their collections scrutinized by fashion experts. Finalists were then placed into different categories including Bridal, Demi-Couture, Ready-to-Wear, Premium, Abaya, Menswear, Bags, Jewelry, and Concept, which will shape the program’s process for each of them moving forward.

Fashion Commission Sector Development Director, Princess Noura bint Faisal Al Saud, said “The enthusiasm and excitement from shortlisted candidates during interviews was palpable, with designers keen to share their business-journey stories, including setbacks and successes, with the Fashion Commission team.

The Saudi 100 Brands program will commence immediately with regular weekly masterclasses and mentoring sessions. Finalists will take part in at least two one-on-one mentoring sessions each month, where progress will be mapped from the perspectives of business development as well as more technical design. Using a bespoke approach, the Saudi 100 Brands team will ask the finalists to set the journey-compass by sharing their visions and aspirations for their participation in the program. The Saudi 100 Brands experts will then tailor the program to the brands’ individual needs.

The program takes the designers where they ask to go and responds to the areas where they feel they would benefit most from support. As the Fashion Commission’s latest initiative, Saudi 100 Brands, covers branding and conceptualization, innovation and technology, sales performance and marketing strategy, and key leadership skills. Riyadh, The Saudi Film Commission is celebrating the remarkable emergence of cinematography and filmmaking in the Kingdom through its exhibition at the 74th edition of Cannes Film Festival, from 6 – 17 July, it was reported here today.

The cinema industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the fastest growing in the Middle East, both in the production and consumption of films and streaming programming. The dynamism of the sector is creating a once-in-a-lifetime business opportunity for international filmmakers, producers and creatives who wish to collaborate with or create content for the Saudi film market, expected to amount to $1.2bn by 2030.

Figures released during the 2020 META Cinema Forum exhibitors’ conference showed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the region’s top-grossing territory, with more than $73 million movie ticket sales made during the previous year, a feat made all the more impressive in a difficult year for cinema due to the pandemic.
