KAUST” Hosts Climate Change Risks, Challenges and Opportunities Workshop with Participation of 200 Researchers, Specialists

Riyadh– Vice-President and Senior Associate of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Dr. Najah Yousef Ashry, stressed the importance of devoting research knowledge, studies and technologies in order to protect and sustain the environment and reduce the effects of climate change, noting that KAUST is keen to intensify its partnerships with various parties concerned with research and studies of climatic variables.

On the sidelines of hosting a workshop entitled “Climate Change Risks, Challenges and Opportunities” by KAUST, in cooperation with the organization of the National Center of Meteorology, represented by the Climate Change Center, Dr. Najah said that the two-day event contributes to supplementing the efforts of the Center through cooperation at the national level and framing the climate information exchange mechanism, in addition to enhancing the participation of research centers in universities.

The workshop witnessed the participation of 200 researchers and specialists from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s various government and research agencies and bodies.

For his part, the CEO of the National Center of Meteorology, Dr. Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, reviewed the goals of the Climate Change Center that are integrated with the Saudi Green Initiative and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which seeks to protect the environment and ensure its sustainability, reduce the effects of climate change, increase reliance on clean energy and reduce carbon emissions in parallel with afforestation of the Kingdom and raising the percentage of vegetation cover in it.

He pointed out that the announcement of HRH Crown Prince about the establishment of the Climate Change Center at the “Middle East Green Initiative” summit, which was held in October 2021, comes within a package of initiatives that enhance the Kingdom’s main role in the international system, towards the phenomenon of climate change.

Dr. Ghulam also stressed the role of the meteorological sector in development programs, plans and projects and in supporting the country’s regional and international orientations with regard to climate and environment.

The workshop aims to enhance technological and technical capabilities and achieve the desired goals of the Climate Change Center through coordination with the participants in the workshop and transfer of knowledge in the field of studies, research and techniques related to the tasks and goals of the Center and benefiting from the experiences of specialists to develop and apply the best tools of climate science models.

It also aims to study the climatic changes expected to affect the region, identify the needs of the concerned authorities from the Center for Climate Change and build bridges of communication with the concerned authorities, in addition to establishing an appropriate mechanism for exchanging climate information at the national level.

This is the first local workshop organized by the Climate Change Center in preparation for the international workshop on climate change, expected to be held next October in Jeddah.

Baquba A rapid response force destroyed three nests for outlaw groups in Diyala Governorate.

A security source told the correspondent of the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) that a rapid response force backed by intelligence efforts, and based on judicial orders, carried out a raid operation to arrest a criminal gang in the orchards of Al-Awashek village on the outskirts of Abi Saida district, northeast of Baquba.

He added that the security force came under heavy fire with light and medium weapons and grenades upon its arrival at the den, stressing that the force responded to the sources of the fire and proceeded to chase the elements of this gang despite the complex geographical nature of the area.

He pointed out that the rapid response force was able to destroy 3 dens of these criminals and 4 motorcycles, as well as seizing phones, a SIM card, 400 BKC bullets and a magazine.

The Turkish MoD Announces the Killing Of Six PKK Militants in Northern Iraq

A statement by the Federal Police Command stated: “A force of the Federal Police, in conjunction with the National Security Detachments and the Economic Security Directorate, accompanied by the inspection detachments affiliated to the Oil Products Distribution Company, raided a garage in Zafaraniya area of ​​Baghdad prepared for smuggling oil derivatives, and seized more than 25 tanks of different sizes inside it, and 10 loading pumps, in addition to 3 vehicles, including a tank for transporting oil materials, 6 meters long and 2 meters wide, containing gas oil.”

It added, “3 people were arrested inside the garage. They were referred to the competent authorities, and the seized materials were originally delivered to the Rusafa Oil Police Station.”

A spacecraft collides with an asteroid near Earth

Baghdad The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) carried out the first planetary rescue mission at dawn today, Tuesday, when a vehicle belonging to it collided with an asteroid in an attempt to change its orbit.

An unmanned spacecraft collided with an asteroid in an attempt to deflect a distant space rock, through which NASA is testing whether this technology can one day be used to protect Earth from any space threat.

Minutes before the spacecraft collided with the asteroid Demorphos, which is 11 million km from Earth, the image of the object began to get bigger and bigger, as the spacecraft approached it more and more.

The mission is known as the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART).

The DART spacecraft, which weighs 589.7 kilograms, was traveling at more than 2,2530.8 kilometers per hour when it collided with the asteroid Demorphos, a more massive space rock 525 feet wide that orbits a larger rocket known as Didymos.

It will take between a few days and a few weeks to see if the path of the small asteroid was really changed by the impact.
