Benzema Masterclass Destroys Barcelona, Puts Real Madrid in Copa del Rey Final

Karim Benzema and Real Madrid enjoyed a hugely memorable game at the Camp Nou as the visitors demolished their fierce rivals Barcelona 4-0, booking a place in the Copa del Rey final, with the Frenchman bagging a hat-trick.

After losing the first-leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu 1-0, Los Merengues were determined not to lose out to the Catalan side again.

In an atmospheric arena in Barcelona, the match began in great spirits for the hosts, as they were confident of overcoming the defending European champions once more this term.

Fans were even in the mood to look to the future, chanting Lionel Messi’s name in the 10th minute of play, to signify to Joan Laporta that they want the club to bring the Argentine back in 2023, the Spanish MARCA newspaper reported.

Yet, on the cusp of half-time that fervor was silence by Vinicius Jr, who continued his excellent domestic campaign with a fine goal.

Barcelona were furious as they felt they should have been given a penalty for handball in the opening exchanges of the first-half.

Karim Benzema thought he had been awarded the opening goal, as he prodded the ball forward after a comedic goal-mouth melee, however Vinicius Jr was adjudged to have taken the vital touch.

What followed will be hugely disappointing for Barcelona as they simply collapsed in the face of Real Madrid pressure.

There was no regrouping after the opener, even though the tie was level at 1-1.

Karim Benzema then brought his own unique style of brilliance to make it 2-0.

The French forward enjoyed some fantastic interplay with Luka Modric before placing the ball casually into the bottom corner of the net.

Los Blancos were then awarded a penalty in the 58th minute, which Benzema converted emphatically, putting him on the hunt for a hat-trick.

In truth, this defensive collapse had cost the Catalan side the tie, and it came as no surprise when the conceded a fourth with just eight minutes left to play.

Marco Asensio and Benzema had tested the gloves of Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the latter stages of the half, but the milestone goal finally came for Benzema when he hit a first-time shot beyond the German, making it 4-1 on aggregate.

This was an iconic moment for the French forward as he became the first Real Madrid player to score a hat-trick against Los Cules since Ferenc Puskas in 1962/63. The 5-1 on that day was also Real Madrid’s biggest win at the Camp Nou, with Wednesday’s 4-0 being the second.

It was a brilliant counter-attack that saw Vinicius Jr claim an assist, and highlighted the defensive deficiencies that plagued the hosts all night long.

Real Madrid can now prepare for a domestic final, and hope to claw back the deficit they face at the top of the Spanish LaLiga Santander table.

Coal Capacity Climbs Worldwide Despite Promises to Slash it

The capacity to burn coal for power went up in 2022 despite global promises to phase down the fuel that’s the biggest source of planet-warming gases in the atmosphere, a report found.

The coal fleet grew by 19.5 gigawatts last year, enough to light up around 15 million homes, according to a report by Global Energy Monitor, an organization that tracks a variety of energy projects around the globe.

That 1% increase comes at a time when the world needs to retire its coal fleet four and a half times faster to meet climate goals, the report said.

In 2021, countries around the world promised to phase down the use of coal to help achieve the goal to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit).

“The more new coal projects come online, the steeper the cuts and commitments need to be in the future,” said Flora Champenois, the report’s lead author and the project manager for GEM’s Global Coal Plant Tracker.

With nearly 2,500 plants around the world, coal accounts for about a third of the total amount of energy installation globally. Other fossil fuels, nuclear energy and renewable energy make up the rest.

Japanese Zoologist Masanori Hata Dies at 87

Japanese zoologist and filmmaker Masanori Hata, who made connecting humans with animals his life’s purpose, has died at 87.

Mutsugoro, as he was fondly known, was famous for directing The Adventures of Milo and Otis, an 80s classic about the unlikely friendship between a kitten and a pug.

Back home in Japan, he also served as an oracle of sorts for TV audiences who wanted to better understand their pets. He reportedly died of a heart attack, BBC news reported.

He lived much of his life at a ranch in Hokkaido, an island in northern Japan, which he shared with his wife, brown bears, horses and dogs of a variety of breeds and sizes.

The property, which he often called an “animal kingdom” is named after him – Mutsugoro in Japanese means mudfish. The ranch was also the setting for The Adventures of Milo and Otis. Released in 1986, the film is still loved by children from that decade.

Hata was born in Fukuoka City in south-west Japan. He earned a degree in animal physiology at the University of Tokyo, then joined the film division of educational firm Gakken, where he made over 20 documentaries.

He won the Japan Essayist’s Club Award in 1968 for a book with the English translation, We animals are all brothers. In 1977, he won Japan’s Kikuchi Kan Prize for literature.

Prophet’s Mosque’s Doors: Iconic Artworks Crafted according to High International Standards

The doors to the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah are among the most spectacular landmarks of this mosque, the second holiest in Islam.

The highly artistic design of the doors has become iconic, and confers identity to the place, projecting sanctity and tranquillity, and being up to its special status.

Undersecretary of Security, Safety and Emergency Nabeel Al-Mseihli told the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that “there are 100 doors to the Prophet’s Mosque, distributed in full symmetry around the four directions of the place, at expansions and roofs, and they are served by 280 employees who work day and night during the holy month of Ramadan”.

Seven entrances have been built to the mosque under the King Fahd Expansion Project, three facing north and four facing east and west, he said, adding that each entrance has seven doors, each three metres wide and six metres high.

“The doors of the Prophet’s Mosque are manufactured by more than 1,600 cubic meters of saj wood; each door is engraved with more than 1,500 gold pieces circular in shape and containing the name of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him),” he said.

He also said that before installing them in the Prophet’s Mosque, the doors had travelled around the world: in France, where they were mixed with gold copper, in America the saj wood was collected, and then they were sent to Spain to be dried in special ovens for five months. The wooden doors were then cut by laser and were manufactured using highly sensitive technologies.
