Aramco and SABIC Agri-Nutrients Receive World’s First TUV Certificate of Accreditation for “Blue” Hydrogen and Ammonia Products

Riyadh– The Saudi Arabian Oil Company (“Aramco”) and the SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company (“SABIC AN”), have obtained the world’s first independent certifications recognizing “blue” hydrogen and ammonia production.

The certifications were granted by TUV Rheinland, a leading independent testing, inspection and certification agency based in Germany, to SABIC AN, in Jubail, for 37,800 tons of “blue” ammonia and to Aramco’s wholly-owned refinery (SASREF), also in Jubail, for 8,075 tons of “blue” hydrogen. To certify ammonia and hydrogen as “blue”, a significant part of the CO2 associated with the manufacturing process needs to be captured and utilized in downstream applications.

Olivier Thorel, Aramco Vice President of Chemicals, said: “These certifications are the first of their kind in the world and signify a major milestone in our efforts to develop clean energy solutions, and advance our hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities. This independent recognition reinforces the work of Aramco and SABIC in decarbonizing multiple sectors, including energy, aviation, transportation chemicals and fertilizer industries.”

SABIC Agri-Nutrients CEO, Abdulrahman Shamsaddin, said: “We are indeed proud of this certification, which is part of our journey towards carbon neutrality. We are confident of further boosting growth with our low carbon portfolio helping our fertilizers as well as chemicals customers achieve their very own sustainability ambitions. We are fully aware that the current global industry challenges related to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions will require us to accelerate our pace of innovation to further strengthen our sustainability commitment. We are well positioned to move forward in this direction.”

SABIC Vice President, Energy Efficiency and Carbon Management, Fahad Al-Sherehy said: “We are leveraging our strong existing infrastructure to produce blue ammonia that can help meet the world’s growing needs for sustainable solutions. To help achieve Saudi Arabia’s target for net-zero by 2060 as part of the Saudi Green Initiative, SABIC recognizes that hydrogen will play an essential role in decarbonisation and it is part of SABIC’s overall roadmap toward carbon neutrality by 2050, with a 20% reduction target in carbon emissions by 2030. Council of Universities Affairs Issues Two Regulations for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies

Riyadh– Led by Minister of Education, Dr. Hamad Al-Sheikh, the Council of University Affairs, issued two new regulations for undergraduate and postgraduate study and examinations to be implemented at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year.

The two decisions will regulate procedures and keep pace with developments in undergraduate and graduate studies. In an effort to increase the global ranking of Saudi universities, these regulations will increase the efficiency of their operations and improve the quality of education outputs in accordance with labor market demands. In the process, this will boost the recruitment of talented and innovative students and foster differentiation and competition among universities.

Board powers are granted to universities in academic procedures based on governance and a flexible institutional framework. Universities will be able to achieve harmony and integration in terms of specializations and responsibilities and diversify the representation of university councils.

Under the new regulation for study and examinations, universities have the power to change the time period for the semester, level or year at the undergraduate level. These new regulations provide a different assessment system that is compatible with the regulations followed by world-leading universities.

These recent changes also accelerate the educational journey for students at the undergraduate level. Now universities can promote a flexible study system for students, allowing them to earn degrees other than a bachelor’s degree. For instance, those who did not complete the requirements for a bachelor’s degree can be awarded a diploma in the specialization they are currently pursuing. The same flexibility is granted in postgraduate programs with universities allowing students to earn a lower academic degree than the program in which they are enrolled.

Conforming to the best academic practices applied by the world’s leading universities, the new regulation for postgraduate studies permits the development of joint programs between universities inside or outside the Kingdom. Also, students enrolled at a non-Saudi university will have the opportunity to enroll in courses at a Saudi university. They may earn a degree or certificate approved by two educational institutions with a joint program in between. Students are permitted to enroll in two programs at the same time or from a previous stage. In addition, students have the option of calculating equivalent courses within their cumulative average.

Many have contributed to the preparation of the two regulations, including the Education and Training Evaluation Commission, a large number of universities and specialists, and officials of government agencies that are members of the Council of University Affairs. They are all working in accordance to enhance the quality of education in Saudi Arabia for generations to come.
