Migration along the Eastern Corridor, Report 29 | as of 31 July 2022

The Horn of Africa and Yemen is one of the busiest and riskiest migration corridors in the world travelled by hundreds of thousands of migrants, the majority of whom travel in an irregular manner, often relying on smugglers to facilitate movement along the Eastern Route. This regional report provides monthly updates on the complex migratory dynamics through Djibouti, Somalia, Yemen and Ethiopia based on diverse data sources and consultations with key informants in the four countries. Moreover, it provides information on the main protection concerns for migrants along the journey, information on the spill over effects of the conflict in Northern Ethiopia observed at the border between Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan, a specific focus on children and information on the returns from Saudi Arabia to Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen.

Jordan’s Royal Society for Conservation of Nature Participates in Saudi Falcons and Hunting Exhibition

Riyadh– The Saudi Falcon Club is keen on exchanging knowledge and acquiring international experiences with international bodies concerned with regulating hunting and protecting nature and the environment, by hosting international associations at the Saudi International Falcons and Hunting Exhibition.

In its current edition for 2022, the exhibition hosted the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature of Jordan, which comes to showcase the Jordanian experience of regulating hunting in Jordan and training falcons, in particular.

The supervisor of the Jordanian pavilion, Abdulrazzaq Al-Hamoud, indicated that this is the first participation of the society in the Saudi International Falcons and Hunting Exhibition, where the pavilion informs visitors of the society’s objectives and its role in raising environmental awareness and laws regulating hunting and protecting falcons from overhunting since 1970s.

Al-Hamoud stated that they are looking to find partnerships with Saudi and Arab associations and institutions participating in the exhibition and to benefit from experiences, especially in the protection of wildlife, legal regulation, implementation of membership programs and ecotourism, praising the development of environmental law in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the establishment of new nature reserves.

IsDB Provides USD 525,000 to support Most Vulnerable People in Afghanistan

Jeddah– Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has provided USD 525,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to address the needs of the most vulnerable and conflict-affected communities in Afghanistan, in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The allocated funds will help the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) to meet immediate humanitarian needs by providing lifesaving emergency food and nutrition assistance, essential healthcare services including routine immunization for children and child-bearing women, basic life support for the most vulnerable communities, transitional shelter and income-generation trainings for war widows as well as disaster and conflict-affected people in Afghanistan

Saudi Youth Handball Team Earn Asian Bronze Medal

Riyadh– The Saudi youth handball team earned, in Manama today, the bronze medal for the first time in history, at the Asian level, after beating their Japanese counterparts 26-25, on the last day of the ninth Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship.

The Saudi national team player, Ahmed Al-Said, won the best player award in the match, for the fourth time during the current tournament.

It is noteworthy that Saudi national team qualified to the Handball World Cup 2023, which will be held in Croatia, after reaching the semi-finals by leading the second group with 10 points.

Buraidah Date Festival Concludes with Remarkable Figures

Buraidah– The Buraidah Date Festival, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, concluded yesterday after realizing remarkable figures in terms of sales volume and the number of vehicles coming to the market loaded with tons of dates, amid a series of cultural, social and awareness events and the participation of several public and private institutions at the Dates City in Buraidah.

The statistics committee at the festival said that the market, between August 1 and 30, received more than 16 million packs, each weighing four kilograms, and 53,000 vehicles loaded with over 57,000 tons of more than 45 kinds of dates.

CEO of the festival Dr. Khalid Al-Nqeidan said that the festival receives support from Prince Dr. Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud, the Governor of Qassim, noting that the festival provided more than 4,000 jobs and received over 355,000 visitors, in addition to welcoming several official delegations from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and abroad.

Saudi Arabia Designates Five Individuals for Their Support of Houthi Militia

Riyadh– The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Presidency of State Security, has designated 5 five individuals for their support of the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist militia.

All assets belonging to the designated individuals listed below must be frozen, and any direct or indirect transactions with them are prohibited:

1- Mansour Ahmed Al-Saadi, Yemeni national, he works and cooperates in smuggling Iranian weapons to Yemen, and has previously received extensive training in Iran, and is the mastermind behind the attacks on international maritime shipments in the Red Sea.

2 – Ahmed Ali Al-Hamzi, Yemeni national, who is in charge of the drone program, received Iranian-made weapons, and has previously received extensive training in Iran.

3- Mohammad Abdulkarim Al-Ghamari, Yemeni national, he received military courses in Iran, and he is directly related to the launching of ballistic missiles and drones.

4- Zakaria Abdullah Yahya Hajar, Yemeni national, he received military courses in Iran and is associated with ballistic missile and drone launches.

5- Ahmed Mohamed Ali Al-Johary, Yemeni national, who is associated with ballistic missile and drone launches.

Death Toll Rises to 1,162 amid Catastrophic Flooding in Pakistan

Islamabad– The death toll of Pakistan’s catastrophic flooding is rising steadily as the cash-strapped country struggles to rescue and care for millions of people displaced by the surging waters, the dpa reported.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that 1,162 people, including 384 children and 231 women, had died due to flooding since mid-June. The numbers are expected to further increase in the coming days. More than 33 million people in some 116 of Pakistan’s 160 administrative districts have been affected by the floods, with at least 72 districts being declared disaster areas.

Hundreds of thousands of people are currently living without food, clean water, shelter and basic basic medicines.

The floods inundated over 2 million acres of agricultural land, destroying crops of cotton, rice, dates, tomato, chilli and other vegetables.

On Tuesday, the United Nations issued a flash appeal for $160 million in emergency aid to help Pakistan.

KSrelief Continues to Distribute Foodstuff to Affected People in Yemen

Al-Jawf, August 31, 2022 SPA — King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) continued to distribute foodstuff to the affected people in Al-Jawf Governorate, Yemen. Yesterday, 139 tons and 635 kilograms of food baskets were distributed, benefiting 7,830 people.

This aid comes within the framework of the efforts provided by KSRelief to alleviate the suffering of Yemeni people as a result of the humanitarian crisis they are going through.

KSrelief Distributes 30 Tons of Food Baskets to Displaced and Affected People in Somalia

Mogadishu– King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) continued distributing food baskets to the displaced and affected people in Hadda District of Banadir Region, Mogadishu. Yesterday, 30 tons of food baskets were distributed, benefiting 2,550 people.

This aid comes as a part of the second phase of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s urgent intervention to cover the humanitarian needs of people affected by drought in Somalia, to support food and nutrition programs for children, water and shelter for the displaced, and life-saving emergency programs.
