Japan Logs $17.7 Billion Goods Trade Deficit in May, 2nd Largest Ever

Riyadh-- Japan logged its second largest ever monthly goods trade deficit of 2.38 trillion yen ($17.7 billion) in May, remaining in the red for the 10th consecutive month mainly due to high commodity prices, Kyodo news agency quoted the Finance Ministry as said Thursday. The trade deficit in May widened from 839.2 billion in the previous month and was the second largest after a 2.80 trillion yen deficit recorded in January 2014, according to the ministry. The value of imports increased 48.9 percent to 9.64 trillion yen, shattering the highest figure on record for the third consecutive month, while exports rose 15.8 percent from a year earlier to 7.25 trillion yen for the 15th straight month of increase, the ministry said in a provisional report. Tokyo-- Asian shares were mixed Thursday, the Associated Press reported. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 added 0.5% in afternoon trading to 26,453.91. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost earlier gains, falling nearly 0.2% to 6,591.10. South Korea's Kospi inched up almost 0.1% to 2,448.65. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.3% to 21,029.07, while the Shanghai Composite fell 0.6% to 3,286.60. In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude jumped 56 cents to $115.87 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It shed $3.62 on Wednesday to $115.31 a barrel.
