Death Toll Rises to 59 in South Africa due to Heavy Rainfall

Johannesburg– At least 59 people have died in South Africa’s eastern coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal due to unusually heavy rainfall, according to provincial Premier Sihle Zikalala. However, the figures are not confirmed as many people are still missing, the dpa reported.

The military has also been mobilized for disaster relief. South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is planning to visit the flooded areas on Wednesday.

Rescue work remains difficult as many roads have been washed away. It was also hard to assess the situation since so many relay towers for mobile communications were offline.
