Jeddah Fountain, 40 Years of Visual Delight

Jeddah: Jeddah Fountain in Jeddah is one of the main tourist attractions on the Red Sea coast. It has been a source of delight for both locals and visitors, including for pilgrims and Umrah performers.

The fountain will be 40 this May. It was built in 1980 and became operational, in its current form, in 1985. With a base in the form of an Arabic mabkhara (censer), it pumps 18 tons of seawater to a height of 312 meters.

The Jeddah fountain’s equipment is salt resistant. This ensures that the pumps and other components will not corrode despite constant exposure to seawater.

A filtration system removes plankton from the seawater before it reaches the pumps. This prevents clogging and ensures smooth operation.

The pumps powering the fountain have the force of a jet engine, which makes it possible for the water to reach a staggering 233 miles per hour.

The fountain is lit by 500 LED lights designed to withstand the constant fall of thousands of tons of water. It only stops working entirely during the annual m
aintenance period.
