H.E. Dr. Hilal Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health, received in his office today (Thursday) a number of school students, under the supervision of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Education as part of the World Children’s Day (WCD) celebration.
The meeting was attended by H.E. Sumaira Chowdhury, UNICEF Representative to the Sultanate of Oman.
The Minister of Health welcomed the students and affirmed their position as “leaders” in building the future of the country in various areas of the public and private sectors.
Meanwhile, the UNICEF Representative to the Sultanate of Oman highlighted the importance of the health sector in the Sultanate of Oman and its role in the health of children in general, noting that the sector, compared to countries she worked in previously, is significantly sophisticated in aspects of services and staff than other countries.
Moreover, H.E. Chowdhury touched upon the Organization’s work with the MOH in terms of Children Integrated Nutrition, breastfeeding, and the strategic communication for behavioral change including best parental care, as well strengthening Omani personnel in school environments as nurses and social specialists.
This interactive meeting provides a platform for the opinions of children and youth to be heard and to have their views taken seriously. Furthermore, it encourages leaders and decision makers to engage this category in the decisions that determine their future thus building up a trust between community and government.
His Excellency the Minister of Health listen to attendees’ suggestions and inquiries regarding the health services and those provided in particular to children.
At the end, the health minister honored the student.
Discussions focused on issues related to children in the Sultanate of Oman, steps needed to be taken to guarantee a better future for children, in addition to proper nutrition at schools, mental health, and the role of youth of both genders in building the future of the country.
World Children’s Day (WCD) is celebrated annually on 20 November, and marks the annual anniversary for adopting the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It highlights the most pressing challenges that are affecting the life of children and supports children and youth engagement.
