Nechirvan Barzani Discusses With The Italian Minister Of Defense The Political Situation In Iraq And The Relations Between Baghdad And Erbil

The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, discussed with the Italian Minister of Defense, Guido Crosito, the political situation in Iraq and the relations between Baghdad and Erbil.

A statement by the Kurdistan Regional Government stated that Barzani received, today, Wednesday, the Italian Minister of Defense, and the two sides discussed ways to strengthen Italy’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan region, the political situation in Iraq, the relations of Erbil and Baghdad, Italy’s role within the international coalition to eliminate ISIS, and the latest developments in combating terrorism.

Nechirvan Barzani renewed the expression of the Kurdistan region’s thanks and gratitude for Italy’s role and military support for Iraq and the region in fighting ISIS, expressing the region’s desire to develop its relations with Italy, and expand joint cooperation in the security field in particular.

Barzani also praised the role of the Italian forces operating in the Kurdistan region in training the Peshmerga forces.

For his part, the Italian Minister of Defense indicated his country’s continuation in providing military support to Iraq and the Kurdistan region and expressing his country’s appreciation for the region’s role in defeating ISIS, adding that the security and stability of Iraq and the region are important to the region and the world.

According to the statement, a group of issues of common concern, the repercussions of the war in Ukraine and the latest developments in the region in general, constituted another focus of the meeting, which was attended by the Italian ambassador, the consul general and the commander of the Italian forces in the Kurdistan region.
