The National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) publishes the most important points of the cooperation framework agreement in the field of water between Iraq and Turkey:
The Prime Minister’s Media Office indicated in a statement that the agreement aims to:
? Developing ways of understanding and cooperation in the water sector, on the principle of equality, good intentions and good neighbourliness.
? Developing a new vision for implementing infrastructure and investment projects for water resources in Iraq.
? Adopting a vision aimed at fair and equitable allocation of transboundary waters.
?Develop a vision for using water in a rational and effective manner.
The agreement includes the following:
? Cooperation through joint projects to improve water management in the Tigris and Euphrates basins.
? Inviting Turkish companies to cooperate in infrastructure for irrigation projects such as; Water harvesting systems and dams, lining canals, installing filtration and desalination plants, and water treatment projects.
? Implementing experiences exchange projects and using modern and packaged irrigation systems and techniques.
? The agreement will continue to be implemented for 10 years, and will be automatically extended for one year each time after the two parties agree.
