SIU: investigations into inmates’ alleged mistreatment underway

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has launched a probe into alleged mistreatment of inmates by Public Security forces at the Jau Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre while carrying out their regular duties within the prisoners’ cells

The SIU launched the investigation following a notification from both the Public Prosecution and the Office of the Ombudsman regarding the allegations by some inmates, who claimed that they had been physically mistreated by the Public Security forces.

The SIU received the reports within the framework of its ongoing cooperation with the national institutions and mechanisms entrusted with enforcing the law and protecting human rights.

The SIU said that it had heard the inmates’ statements, ordered their examination by the SIU forensic examiner, requested the inmates’ medical reports, if there are any, and collected CCTV camera recording of the incident.

The SIU assigned its judicial police to investigate into the incident to uncover its circumstances, adding that investigations are underway.
