Istanbul (NINA)- The United Nations revealed that it expects that the losses caused by the earthquakes that struck southern Turkey during the past month will exceed $100 billion.

This was stated by the representative of the United Nations Development Program in Turkey, Louisa Fenton, during her participation remotely today, Tuesday, in the regular press conference at the organization’s office in Geneva.

The UN official participated in the press conference from the state of Gaziantep, southern Turkey, via video conference technology. She indicated that a month had passed since the devastating earthquake that struck southern Turkey at dawn on the sixth of last February.

Fenton said: that about 2.7 million people have been displaced from the earthquake-hit areas in southern Turkey, and that the earthquakes led to the collapse of about 600,000 buildings and work centers as a result of this disaster, expressing her expectation that earthquake losses will exceed 100 billion dollars.

The UN official added that the United Nations is ready to support Turkey during its reconstruction of the areas affected by the earthquake, pointing out that there are many international mechanisms to provide funding for it in this regard.
