Al-Tuwaijri Called on Humanitarian and Relief Providers to Enhance their Response to Help Alleviate Suffering of Affected People from Somalia Drought, Sudan Floods

Riyadh– Secretary General of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) Dr. Saleh bin Hamad Al-Tuwaijri stressed that the humanitarian conditions in Somalia is getting worse in light of expectations for the situation to exacerbate, requiring effective players in the humanitarian field to enhance the humanitarian response for those affected by the drought and its ramifications.

In a speech during the inauguration of a partnership meeting that the secretariat general held with effective players in the humanitarian field, under the title: “Together for humanity… Somalia has kept suffering from environmental problems for a long time, he said: “ARCO had already launched two humanitarian calls calling on humanitarian organizations to offer what they can to save the affected people from the drought in Somalia and the floods of Sudan,” noting that this meeting aims at enhancing the humanitarian response to those affected by the drought in Somalia and floods in Sudan and to boost coordination to attract necessary assistance for the affected people from these two catastrophes.

The secretary general stressed the importance of partnerships to the success of the humanitarian work, saying: “No one can work alone; joint efforts, cooperation and distributing roles among agencies working in the humanitarian field are a must, so there is a need for a strong stance and a swift interaction to offer instant aid to the Somali people who are suffering from the worst famine in 60 years and for those affected by the floods in several Sudanese provinces who now have no shelter.”

He added: “We call on all effective sides in the humanitarian field to immediately enhance the emergency response for the dire and increasing humanitarian needs in the two countries, including shelter, food, clothes and medicines, through expanding the scope of relief assistance and offering donations.”

Participants in the partnership meeting stressed that they will continue to offer whatever assistance they can.
