AT LEAST 3 DEAD IN BUILDING COLLAPSE IN EGYPT’S COASTAL CITY OF ALEXANDRIA

At least 3 people were killed when a 14-story apartment building collapsed in Egypt’s northern coastal city of Alexandria, authorities said Tuesday. The high-rise in the Mediterranean city’s neighborhood of Muntazah collapsed early on Monday and initial reports said eight people were missing beneath the rubble. On Tuesday, the city authorities confirmed that three bodies had been pulled out but did not say if anyone was still missing. Two people were reported injured in the collapse but have since been discharged from hospital. It was also not immediately known what caused the collapse but such incidents are common in Egypt, where shoddy construction is widespread in shantytowns, poor city neighborhoods and rural areas. The city’s governor, Mohamed Al-Sharif, said search efforts at the site were underway and that an investigation into the cause of the collapse was launched. Some 16 families lived in the building as full-time residents while the rest of the apartments were being rented out to beachgoers that come to Alexandria for a break during the scorching summer months. With real estate at a premium in big cities like Alexandria and Cairo, developers seeking bigger profits frequently violate planning permits and extra floors are often added to buildings without permission. In February six people were killed in the Nile Delta city of Damanhour after cooking gas cylinders exploded in the basement of a four-story building, collapsing the entire structure. Egyptian authorities have in recent years launched a crackdown on illegal construction and in many places, moved residents from unsafe houses and shantytowns to newly built cities. Violators of building permits have also been jailed and in many cases, illegally built buildings have been destroyed.

HM The Sultan Offers Eid Al Adha Prayers

The Sultanate of Oman today celebrated the first day of Eid Al Adha (1444 AH).

Meanwhile, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik offered the Eid prayers at Sayyid Tarik bin Taimour Mosque in the Wilayat of A’Seeb, Governorate of Muscat.

The prayers were led by Dr. Mohammed Said Al Ma’amari, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, who delivered the Eid sermon, starting it with gratitude to the Almighty Allah’s bounties and prayers for His messenger, Prophet Mohammed.

The sermon laid emphasis on the concept of security and development. Quoting verses of the Holy Quran, the sermon stressed that the greatest sought-after goals in life are the safety of homelands and tranquility of souls. It pointed out that pilgrimage during the sacred months of the year constitutes a symbolic resorting to safety and denotes that the development of the homeland rests on the pillar of security and stability.

The sermon affirmed that, as per the Holy Quran, security takes precedence over economic prosperity, though both are significant and both are required; thus achieving stability as a public interest takes precedence over the interests of individuals. It also observed that by achieving safety, hearts are united and social harmony strengthened, with people seeking means of livelihood in an orderly manner.

The sermon underlined the fact that the days of Hajj pilgrimage are an enactment of renewal of gratitude to Allah for the bounties and an embodiment of unity and rejection of division and disagreement. It argued that with this adherence to the cord of faith in God, the individuals’ care focuses on building and reconstruction.

The Eid sermon arrived at the conclusion that, since social life is based on authorities and partnerships, then a nation’s stability and prosperity can only be achieved by obeying the ruler and rallying around the leadership.

After the prayers, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik received greetings and welcomed blessings on the occasion of Eid Al Adha from some Royal Family members, ministers, advisers, military commanders and officials. His Majesty wished them a happy Eid.

Upon the departure of His Majesty the Sultan from Sayyid Tarik bin Taimour Mosque, the artillery fired a 21-gun salute.

After that, the motorcade of the country’s monarch left the mosque, as his loyal citizens prayed to the Almighty Allah to protect him. They also prayed for the return of happy occasions on His Majesty for many years to come.

FINANCE MINISTRY ON “ALVAREZ & MARSAL” REPORT: WHAT WE RECEIVED IS A DRAFT & DISPOSING OF ITS CONTENT BELONGS TO CABINET, CIRCULATED NEWS ABOUT ‘MENTIONED NAMES’ IS INCORRECT

The press office of the Ministry of Finance issued a statement on Tuesday, in which it clarified media circulated news on the report of the ‘Alvarez and Marsal’ company related to the forensic audit of the Banque du Liban accounts. The statement indicated that “what the Ministry of Finance received from ‘Alvarez and Marsal’ is nothing but a draft of the preliminary report of the forensic audit, which is still in its incomplete form and clarifications are being collected on some inquiries.” It also stated that the contract with the “Alvarez and Marsal” company was signed with the Lebanese government represented by the Minister of Finance, and as such, the role of the Finance Ministry is limited, according to the provisions of the contract, to mere coordination between BDL and the auditing company. Accordingly, the Ministry’s statement clarified that the audit report is the property of the Lebanese government and not the Finance Ministry, which necessitates that its final copy be presented to the Council of Ministers, and hence, disposing of its content remains within the powers of the cabinet. Finally, the statement categorically denied what was circulated in the media about the draft report sent to the Ministry of Finance mentioning economic, financial and political figures, particularly House Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and other Lebanese and non-Lebanese figures.
