Iraq and Syria discuss the common water file

Baghdad The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab Abdullah, discussed with the Syrian Ambassador to Baghdad, Satam Jadaan Al-Dandah

 

prospects of joint cooperation and the water file between the two brotherly countries.

 

The minister stressed, according to a statement by the ministry, the need to unify visions and positions to face the challenges facing the country’s irrigation reality, since Iraq was subjected to the most severe drought for three consecutive seasons, which clearly affected the country’s irrigation reality , as well as the Iraqi marshes environment and its ecological heritage.

 

Abdullah added, “Irrigation facilities in Iraq and Syria were damaged as a result of ISIS terrorist gangs controlling some areas in the two countries, and the ministry is working to restore them to work within the Iraqi storage and control system.”

 

He stressed: the importance of continuing to work together in order to improve the irrigation reality between the two countries by holding seminars, holding workshops, developing the staff of the ministry in the two countries, and exchanging visits and meetings at the ministerial and technical levels, the latest of which was the participation of the Minister of Irrigation in the Syrian Republic, Dr. Tammam Raad, in the work of the Second Baghdad International Water Conference. The meeting was held during the month of March of last year 2022 and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry and the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) to exchange scientific information, develop the technical capabilities of workers in the field of irrigation, and enhance joint cooperation in the field of integrated water resources management and irrigation water management, and raise the efficiency of its use and the importance of communication and discussing the work of the Iraqi National Committee for the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program (IHP), as it is one of the important programs that are unique in the field of water under the umbrella of UNESCO.

 

For his part, the ambassador expressed the depth of the relationship between Iraq and Syria, stressing support for all the ministry’s directions.
