PowerChina-constructed Mali Gouina hydropower station completed

Alleviating electricity shortages in West Africa

On December 3, 2022, the inauguration of the Gouina Hydropower Station, which is owned and managed by the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS), financed by the Export-Import Bank of China, and constructed by PowerChina, was held in the Diamou area of the Kayes region.

The inauguration was co-chaired by Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Mali. He warmly congratulated the successful completion of the Gouina hydropower station, thanks to the Chinese government and the Chinese Embassy in Mali for their strong support for the power construction in Mali and even West Africa. He also thanked PowerChina for its contribution to the project implementation.

The Gouina Hydropower Station falls along the Senegal River in Mali. The dam is 19 meters high, with a total length of 1317 meters and a storage capacity of 136 million cubic meters. It took 6 years to complete the construction. According to PowerChina, the Gouina Hydropower Station is one of the largest construction projects invested by Chinese companies in Mali.

As a large-scale infrastructure project in the area involved in the “Belt and Road” initiative, once operational, the station is expected to generate about 621 million kilowatt-hours of power. It will form a cascade reservoir and stations with Manantali and Felou hydropower stations, contributing to a continuous and stable power grid covering a large region. The grid will overcome power shortages in Mali and boost local industrial and social and economic development. Besides Mali, the grid will send power to Senegal and Mauritania in West Africa, which will improve local people’s quality of life.

In 2003, the Mali office of PowerChina was officially established, and PowerChina’s first bridge project entered the Mali market. In 2009, PowerChina acquired the Felou Hydropower Station under the framework of OMVS through IOB. على سبيل المثال، تنص شركة Rivian الأمريكية المصنعة للسيارات الكهربائية والتي تقدم خدمة السيارات عند المنزل على أن لديها القدرة على إجراء “تشخيصات شاملة من بعيد من خلال منصة السيارة المتصلة الخاصة بنا. يمكن تحديد معظم المشكلات بشكل استباقي، وذلك بفضل مجموعتنا من أجهزة الاستشعار المدمجة والخوارزميات التنبؤية المرتبطة بها. يمكننا في كثير من الأحيان إخطارك قبل أن تشعر بمشكلة”.

PIF Announces Completion of Second Green Bond Issuance of USD 5.5 billion

Riyadh– The Public Investment Fund (PIF) has completed its second green bond issuance which raised USD 5.5 billion to finance or refinance PIF’s green investments, in accordance with its Green Finance Framework.

The issuance follows PIF’s inaugural green bond in October 2022, the first-ever green bond issued by a sovereign wealth fund and the first-ever 100 year green bond. It will further diversify PIF’s sources of debt funding, in line with its Medium-Term Capital Raising strategy.

This latest bond issuance was more than 6 times oversubscribed, with books exceeding USD 33 billion. It was issued in 3 tranches, comprising:

USD 1.75 billion (SAR 6.56 billion), 7 years

USD 2 billion (SAR 7.5 billion), 12 years

USD 1.75 billion (SAR 6.56 billion), 30 years

The bond was sold to a wide range of institutional investors globally, including Asia.

The issuance reflects PIF’s role as the driver of economic transformation in Saudi Arabia and as one of the largest and most impactful investment funds in the world, in addition to demonstrating PIF’s commitment to its Green Finance Framework. PIF’s Green Finance Framework was created in line with best market practice, and is fully compliant with the International Capital Market Association’s Green Bond Principles 2021 and the Loan Market Association’s Green Loan Principles 2021.

As with its inaugural bond issuance, PIF will allocate an amount equal to the net proceeds of the issuance to fund eligible green projects in accordance with its Green Finance Framework, which includes projects in the space of renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable water management, pollution prevention and control, green buildings and clean transportation.

Al-Rafidain Bank sells seven thousand dollars per passenger at Baghdad International Airport

Baghdad Al-Rafidain Bank set the ceiling for selling the dollar at Baghdad International Airport at seven thousand dollars per passenger.

The bank said in a statement today, Friday: “The highest ceiling for selling dollars at the bank’s outlet at Baghdad International Airport amounted to seven thousand dollars per passenger, and the official price set by the Central Bank was 1320 dinars per dollar.”

Low oil prices.. Brent is less than $85 a barrel

Baghdad Oil prices fell today, Friday, as it did not appear to have suffered significant damage to the oil infrastructure as a result of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, while US inventories increased and investors were concerned about the increase in US interest.

Brent crude settled at $84.50 a barrel, down 59 cents, or 0.7 percent, and US West Texas Intermediate crude futures settled at $78.06 a barrel, down 41 cents, or 0.5 percent. The two benchmarks rose more than 5 percent this week.

The earthquake, which killed more than 19,000 people, initially pushed oil prices higher on the prospect of major damage to pipelines and other infrastructure and cutting off supplies of crude to the global market for a specified period.
