The President of the Republic stresses the need to pay attention to archaeological sites and to preserve their cultural nature and historical depth

Baghdad, The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, stressed the importance of caring for archaeological areas and preserving their civilized nature and historical depth.

President Rashid pointed out, during his meeting with the Director Representative of UNESCO in Iraq, Paolo Fontani, to: “The importance of strengthening means of cooperation to develop the sectors of education, culture and science, and to preserve heritage and cultural diversity.”

He stressed, according to a presidential statement, the need for concerted efforts and support of international organizations to pay attention to archaeological sites and develop the facilities attached to them, while preserving their civilized nature and historical depth, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities.

For his part, Fontani reviewed the plans and programs prepared by the organization to rehabilitate archaeological and heritage areas, pointing to the close relationship and continuous cooperation between the two sides, due to Iraq’s deep cultural heritage.

He stressed, “The organization is currently carrying out several projects in Basra, the Citadel of Erbil, and Mosul, in which it relies on Iraqi cadres and competencies,” noting: “The organization has held several courses and workshops in many Iraqi universities to develop students’ capabilities.”
