The President of the Republic: We seek good relations with everyone. The issue of water is complex / Expanded

Baghdad, The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Rashid, affirmed: “Iraq seeks good relations with everyone, provided that it maintains its independence.”

Rashid said in an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos: “My constitutional duty is to preserve Iraq, its interests and independence, and the government has the option to end the presence of foreign forces at any time.”

Regarding the internal political situation, he said: “The elections in Iraq were conducted properly and were accepted by all.”

He continued: “The relationship between the federal government and the Kurdistan region is very good, even if there are some problems between the two parties. The failure to approve the oil and gas law affected the relationship with the Kurdistan region, saying that he is in favor of any referendum,” but the implementation of its results must be according to conditions. .

On foreign relations, Rashid pointed out: “Work is underway to improve relations with neighboring countries, countries in the region and the world,” stressing the pursuit of good relations with everyone, provided that Iraq’s independence is preserved.

He continued: “It is my constitutional duty to preserve Iraq, its interests and independence, and the government has the option to end the presence of foreign forces at any time.”

On relations with Turkey, the President said: “Turkey is an important neighbor and trade exchange with it amounts to 30 billion dollars. As for the water issue, it is complex and we seek to achieve progress in it through understandings, and we seek to obtain a fair share of water through negotiation with Turkey.”

On the economic issue, he said: “Iraq is continuing its infrastructure development program and lifting the suffering of citizens, and we have begun to deal with important files, most notably energy and electricity,” referring to Iraq’s openness to all foreign companies in the energy sector.

He stressed: “The decline in the value of the dinar is not in the hands of the government, but rather due to global conditions, and it has begun to control remittances abroad to maintain financial stability.”
